“This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).

It’s a time of year for great joy, but sometimes our joy can be stamped out with the busyness of the season. As we begin this time of Advent, let’s make getting our hearts ready the first priority in our schedule. Jesus understood the need to get away before the demands of the day bombarded him. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35). He has set for us a great example of prioritizing our time.

And even when life is busy and we are struggling, we can take comfort from the way Jesus lovingly guided his disciples. “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:30–31).

Watch for and listen to our Savior. He understands a busy day. He knows what it’s like to be called on to help, to heal or to go away. He answers the cries of the people and identifies himself as the good shepherd. “He goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice” (John 10:4). Our simple instructions: “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 14:4–5). So, in this Advent season, dwell with Jesus. Spend time with him. Listen for his voice. He will guide and direct your steps. We can depend on that! Trust his leading and walk the quieter path.
