The northern kingdom of Israel was facing destruction. Under the inexorable pressure of the empire of Assyria, one king after another was being bloodily replaced. The sins of the nation seemed to be multiplying. Defeat and exile were looming. What would God say to a people like that? He cannot ignore their sins and the consequences of those sins, but he also wants to tell them that while his love will not prevent those consequences neither will it be deterred by them. What that means is that there is hope beyond the destruction. If, in the midst of judgment, they will turn back to him, judgment need not be the end. As we in America look at what may be a grim future, we too need to be assured that God’s love extends through and beyond whatever judgment our bad choices may bring upon us.
