SUMMARY:Hosea: God's Unchanging Love
DESCRIPTION:The northern kingdom of Israel was facing destruction. Under the inexorable pressure of the empire of Assyria\, one king after another was being bloodily replaced. The sins of the nation seemed to be multiplying. Defeat and exile were looming. What would God say to a people like that? He cannot ignore their sins and the consequences of those sins\, but he also wants to tell them that while his love will not prevent those consequences neither will it be deterred by them. What that means is that there is hope beyond the destruction. If\, in the midst of judgment\, they will turn back to him\, judgment need not be the end. As we in America look at what may be a grim future\, we too need to be assured that God’s love extends through and beyond whatever judgment our bad choices may bring upon us. \nHosea workbook

SUMMARY:DFK Symposium: Prevenient Grace
DESCRIPTION:Colin Williams concluded that Wesley’s emphasis on preliminary grace enabled him to break “the chain of logical necessity” that seemed to be the inevitable consequence of original sin. But does Scripture teach this concept? A leading evangelical theologian dismissed it\, saying\, “The problem is that there is no clear and adequate basis in Scripture for this concept of a universal enablement. The theory\, appealing though it is in many ways\, simply is not taught explicitly in the Bible.” \nHowever\, Dr. Brian Shelton\, chair of the Christian Studies and Philosophy Department at Asbury University\, has written a solid introduction to the doctrine of prevenient grace from a biblical\, historical\, and theological perspective. He makes a case for original sin\, conditional election\, prevenient grace\, and the universal opportunity for all to believe. \nIn this symposium Dr. Shelton will deliver the keynote address. After lunch there will be a panel discussion on the topic: \n\nDr. Chris Bounds will represent the thought of Arminius.\nDr. Suzanne Nicholson will represent the implications to systematic and practical theology.\nRev. Bill Kierce\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE\n  \nSpeakers\nDr. Brian Shelton has worked in higher education for twenty years at four Christian colleges\, serving as professor and as academic dean. He holds a Ph.D. in historical theology centered on early Christianity. His areas of interest include the early church in Rome\, patristic exegesis\, martyrdom\, and Italian religious history. He has led several study tours in Europe\, finding on-site experiences to be one of the best ways for students to grasp the significance of history. These have included Luther in Germany\, Bonhoeffer in Berlin\, the Renaissance in Florence\, the early church in Rome\, and the Holocaust in Poland. Brian spent ten years in biology research\, recently leading a medical and sustainable development mission experience to Honduras. He is a CCCU Leadership Development Institute Fellow\, a Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellow\, and a senior fellow with the John and Charles Wesley Center for Christian Thought. He serves on the board of the Manchester Wesley Research Centre. For more information about Dr. Shelton\, see his full bio on the Asbury University website here. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n   10:30–10:45 a.m.\nArrival\n\n\n   10:45 a.m.\n“Prevenient Grace”\n(Dr. Brian Shelton)\n\n\n   11:25 a.m.\nQ&A\n\n\n   11:45 a.m.\nBreak\n\n\n   12:00 p.m.\nLunch\n\n\n   1:00 p.m.\nPanel Discussion\n\n\n   2:30 p.m.\nClosing Thoughts\n\n\n   3:00 p.m.\nDismissal\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Book\nPrevenient Grace: God’s Provision for Fallen Humanity (by W. Brian Shelton)\n$24.95\nGod enables all people to exercise saving faith in Christ by mitigating the effects of depravity\, an initiative that theologians call prevenient grace or ‘enabling grace.’ Dr. Shelton clearly identifies the proper place of this concept in the theological landscape and calls for a new dialogue about its role in individual salvation. Prevenient grace has been a bone of contention between Wesleyan and Calvinist Christians for nearly five hundred years. However\, Dr. Shelton traces the biblical and historical roots of this concept and concludes that it is vital to understanding how God reaches sinful human beings. He explains\, ‘This book endeavors to show that prevenient grace is implicit if not explicit in Scripture; that it is not contrary to any other biblical teaching about salvation; and that it offers the best coherence of the biblical data on saving faith.’ ‘Prevenient grace is just one part of the great drama of salvation. Some of the most brilliant theologians have been perplexed by it\, so they have denied and even denounced the doctrine. However\, prevenient grace effectively confronts the problem of inherited depravity and yet gives due regard to God’s role in the salvation of fallen human beings. The effect is captured by one contemporary theologian who said\, ‘Man is set free to depend on God.”

SUMMARY:Holiness Collaborative 2023
DESCRIPTION:Holiness Collaborative 2023\nNovember 7—9\, 2023\nThe Language of Holiness\n \nThe Holiness Collaborative was launched to provide a setting for individuals passionate about the transformative work of the Holy Spirit to gather for a time of encouragement\, equipping\, and resourcing. We gather\, carrying in our hearts the contexts and lives we are blessed to minister to\, seeking the Lord’s help to faithfully continue serving and seeing His transformation take root. \nThis year’s Holiness Collaborative will look at “The Language of Holiness”. Through small group discussions\, teaching sessions\, and other collaborative approaches we will look at the power of our words as we share the powerful message of Holiness with those we serve. \nLeadership Team\n  Bill Kierce is the President of The Francis Asbury Society\, husband to Kim\, father to three grown children\, and grandfather to 8 grandkids. He is deeply convinced that we are incapable in our own strength to fulfill God’s call or to live a life that wholly pleases God. He recalls the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit as “I was met that night with waves of God’s presence overwhelming me with the reality of His love and power. I have claimed that as my initial baptism with the Holy Spirit and entrance into entire sanctification.” \nJosh Hallahan is the Director of Discipleship at The Francis Asbury Society\, husband to Kelly\, and father to Caleb\, Seth\, Elizabeth\, and Rebekah. Josh firmly believes that discipleship ought to be at the heartbeat of all Christ followers\, and he counts it an absolute joy to walk alongside the men and women Jesus has entrusted him with. Josh loves gathering like-minded individuals together to collaborate and encourage one another to continue serving Jesus faithfully. \nDr. Matt O’Reilly is the lead pastor at Christ Church in Birmingham Alabama Husband to Naomi. SUMMARY:Malachi: Signs of a Slipping Heart
DESCRIPTION:The topic of this study was Malachi: Symptoms of a Slipping Heart. By exploring the message of the Old Testament’s last prophet before the arrival of Jesus 400 years later\, we gleaned important insights into how God’s people can have our hearts renewed by the Holy Spirit in preparation for Jesus’ next appearing. The truth in all of our lives is that our hearts can so easily grow lukewarm and even cold during long seasons of uncertainty and waiting upon God. These are the times when we should be diligent in keeping the fire in our hearts burning. This study will help us do just that. \n \nSession Notes\n\n\n\nSession 1\nIntroduction\n\n\nSession 2\nQuestioning the Love of God\n\n\nSession 3\nOffering God what is worthless\n\n\nSession 4\nRelational Infidelity\n\n\nSession 5\nAccusing God of Injustice\n\n\nSession 6\n\n\n\nSession 7\nActing Arrogantly\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Leviticus: The Way of Holiness
DESCRIPTION:Led by Dr. John N. Oswalt\, an American scholar and distinguished professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. \nThe Book of Leviticus is often among the least favorite Bible books to study. However\, when it is put into its context in the covenant documents extending from Exodus 24 to Numbers 10\, it has a great deal to say to us about God’s purpose for our lives and the way he intends us to live. \nLeviticus Bible Study – Student Workbook \nSession Videos\nThe first session recording was highly distorted. A knowledgeable friend has repaired it as much as possible\, but some distortion remains. \n \n

SUMMARY:FAS Regional Retreat: "Grace Greater"
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Francis Asbury Society (FAS) regional retreat was themed “Grace Greater.” We enjoyed great fellowship and worship and dug into God’s Word together. The retreat was held at Longs Chapel Methodist Church in Waynesville\, NC\, August 18–20. One of our teachers was Dr. Prabhu Singh\, a member of the Asbury Theological Seminary Board of Trustees and former president of the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies (SAIACS) seminary in India. Prabhu has joined our team at FAS as an associate evangelist and is partnering with us to train a new generation of preaching evangelists. \nRecordings\nThe recordings are currently being edited. We will send an email to attendees as well as post a notice here when they are available.

SUMMARY:Numbers: There and Back Again
DESCRIPTION:Led by Dr. John N. Oswalt\, an American scholar and distinguished professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. In the Book of Numbers we travel with the people of Israel from Sinai to the Plains of Moab across from Jericho. Along the way we learn what life in the Spirit could be and what it too often is and how to prevent that deficiency. \nRecordings of each session can be purchased and downloaded directly from our Bookstore\, or purchase a USB of all the session recordings (workbook is included).

SUMMARY:Hebrews: The Whole Way
DESCRIPTION:Led by Dr. John N. Oswalt\, an American scholar and distinguished professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. \nTo many early Christians\, and not a few today\, it looked as though God’s plan of salvation in the Old Testament had failed and that he had gone to Plan B with Jesus. That meant that you either had to choose the Jewish way or the Christian way. The author of Hebrews (Priscilla\, Aquila\, Paul?) says\, “Not at all!\,” and shows how the two parts of the Bible fit together\, hand and love. Keep the faith! \n \nSchedule\nThe handouts for each session will be provided via links in the schedule\, to be updated week by week. \n\n\n\nFebruary 16\nIntroduction and Heb 1\n\n\nFebruary 23\nHeb 2:1–3:6\n\n\nMarch 9*\nHeb 3:7–4:13\n\n\nMarch 16\nHeb 4:14–5:10\n\n\nMarch 23\nHeb 5:11–6:20\n\n\nMarch 30\nHebrews 7\n\n\nApril 6\nHeb 8:1–9:10\n\n\nApril 13\nHeb 9:11–10:18\n\n\nApril 20\nHeb 10:19–11:40\n\n\nApril 27\nHebrews 12\n\n\nMay 4\nHebrews 13\n\n\n\n*We will not meet on March 2. \nSession Videos\nWe will record each of the sessions and make each week’s video available until the following week for online streaming via links in emails sent only to registrants.
